This tree has not successfully compartmentalized a previous wound and as a result has an entry for disease to cripple the tree in the near future.  This tree has successfully compartmentalized a wound, although the inner wood is revealed, it looks to be a normal healthy healed wound. This tree suffered some extreme damage, as no remedial action was taken, it has weakened the core structure and should be removed before it collapses from its own weight. This is very dangerous.
Trees comes in many shapes and formations.

This dead sweet chestnut, although looks sturdy and strong, will eventually collapse and may well cause damage to life and property.

Kent-treecare specialise in storm damage clean up operations. This tree was damaged and eventually split in a storm.
Even though fungus grows in many types on living and dead trees, it is not a sign of decay, but a healthy balanced eco-system that benefits the environment. This hornbeam tree was pollarded long ago and split in the middle, probably due to the way in which it was pollarded. Still, a nice picture, and shows how resilient trees are, even damaged like this. Look carefully at this topped tree.. can you see the face ??

This tree suffered some lightning damage. The tree will heal itself with some distinctive scare damage in the future. Eventually, these leaning trees will fall and may well end up contributing to blocking this stream, causing flooding. Kent-tree care can professionally manage such areas to maximise the beauty of a natural forest environment  This mighty tree is screaming out for a dose of dead wood removal. This process would give the tree a much needed growth boost and is essential to a healthy productive tree.
When a tree is damaged or hurt, it will repair itself by growing over the wound to encapsulate the exposed area. In some cases, it just doesn't know when to stop :) Accelerated growth and malformed branches can cause the tree to damage its self over a long period of time. Removal of such affected areas prolong the life and health of a tree. While looking almost life like... Topping a tree will only serve to hasten it's demise.

These tree's were mutilated by topping when other methods should have been used.

A sad case of aggressive pollarding. These really should be removed to allow the space to be used by replanted renewable trees as they are not contributing to anything. Another example of rapid regeneration over a wound or by disease. Excessive rubbing of branches can make a tree more susceptible to infections which in the long term, can cost more to treat that the preventative actions to begin with.

In a tree like this... if you see daylight on a supporting limb.. it's bad news for the tree.
